Fun activities and workshops which aim to build skills and confidence are the main highlights of the International Youth Day celebrations in Northampton on Monday 12 August.
The free celebrations, which have been organised by Northampton Youth Forum in partnership with Northampton Borough Council and Grosvenor Shopping Northampton, will take place across communal areas and shop units in the shopping centre between 12pm and 5pm.
The jammed packed afternoon event boasts a programme including performances from local musicians, information stalls, fun activities and interactive workshops.
Headline activities include a DJ and music workshop with Inspiration FM, t-shirt customising session with Northampton Association of Youth Clubs, a climbing wall, a graffiti art project with Lemon Pop, a photo booth, ping pong tournaments with the Leisure Trust and boxing taster sessions with Far Cotton Boxing Club.
The Lowdown, Free2Talk, Ngage, Q Space and NHFT sexual health outreach will also be on hand at the shopping centre to chat to young people and share information and freebies.
To help people get to and from the activities, UNO buses will be offering reduced £2 day tickets in Northampton borough, for young people aged up to 19 years old, throughout the day.
Councillor Anna King, Cabinet member for community engagement and safety, said: “This year our Youth Forum wanted to host a fun-skills building event which ties into the 2019 theme of ‘Transforming Education’.
“Focusing on engaging young people with activities that will help them to learn new skills and boost their confidence, we’ve teamed up with Grosvenor Shopping Northampton and other partners to develop a wide-ranging programme for the afternoon, appealing to lots of different interests and tastes. We now can’t wait to welcome young people and their families to the event on 12 August.”
James Roberts, centre manager at Grosvenor Shopping Northampton, said: “Education is such a powerful tool and concept, particularly for young people still finding their way in an ever-changing world, and so we’re delighted to be hosting this event to celebrate International Youth Day.
“The day will be all about highlighting efforts to make high-quality learning more inclusive and accessible. The jam-packed afternoon that Northampton Youth Forum has planned will champion that message in an interactive and engaging manner that connects with our local community.
“We’re also pleased to be working with so many local charities and partners, including The Lowdown, that do so much great work across Northampton. We feel that everyone who attends Grosvenor Shopping Northampton on International Youth Day will certainly take something beneficial away from the event.”
